On Writing Well

But finally the purposes that writers serve must be their own. What you write is yours and nobody else's. Take your talent as far as you can and guard it with your life. Only you know how far that is; no editor knows. Writing well means believing in your writing and believing in yourself, taking risks, daring to be different, pushing yourself to excel. You will write only as well as you make yourself write.


I really liked this whole book, On Writing Well by William Zinsser. It really inspired me. I want to be a published author and have already started several books. I love reading good authors and Zinsser was awesome. He kept me interested and captivated by his words. I want to be an fantastic writer, like him. This passage, one of the last in the book, was one that inspired me the most. His saying that you'll only write as well as you make yourself is so true and I need to watch out for that, because sometimes I just do as much as needed, so I can get by. I am not just going to write; I am going write well, and love it.
